LEWIS MODEL

The characteristics of the Spanish population place it as a multi-active culture in the Lewis model. Although Colombia is also classified as a multi-active culture, if a Spaniard decides to study in a city like Barranquilla, he will face different problems. Although the language of the two countries is the same, the words or intonation have different meanings. For example in Colombia it is common and is considered appropriate, if people say before you ask for something in a cafeteria or a store the phrase "you give me". In Spain, this word is only used to receive something at no cost, so you might think that you will leave without paying. Another example is the word camel, in Colombia it means getting a job, but in Spain they are people who sell drugs, so it can generate some confusion. Barranquilla is a city located in the coastal region, which is characterized by using words that may not exist in Spanish lexicon, and the way of speaking could make communication difficult.

Another problem could be with the way of greeting. In Spain it is common to greet with two kisses when you meet a person. in Barranquilla only one kiss is given and that happens when you have a lot of confidence with the person, while you must shake hands or smile. If a Spaniard tries to greet a stranger in this way to a stranger in Colombia, he would be displaced and could get into trouble with the person or his partner.

Meal time becomes a problem due to its difference with Colombia. If a Spaniard enters a restaurant at 3:00 pm, he will not find lunch. This is because in Colombia it is eaten between 12:00 y 2:00 pm, while in Spain between 2:30 y 3:30 pm. Dinner is also different. In Colombia he gets used to eating before 8:00 pm, while the Spaniards eat araund 9:00 pm.
But the main problem would be the transport system. In spain, transportation is very efficient. Bus stop only at strategically located bus stops, and they always pass at specific time in each place. The bus routes are very punctual. In Colombia, the bus stops are not in all the streets and for the bus to stop you must sing. In addition, buses do not have a fixed time so you can arrive early or late.
